Simpson and Pryor Bag Brace of Wins as Sidmouth SE Golf Croquet Team Go Down

Chairman

Sidmouth Herald published 7 August 2014

Dowlish Wake Croquet Club were hosts to Sidmouth SE Golf Croquet team last Friday, to play a match in the South West Federation Golf Croquet League, writes Helen Pryor

It was another sweltering hot day and the hosts had, very thoughtfully, filled the fridge with jugs of cold water, to which was added ice cubes - everyone could help themselves.

The lawns at Dowlish Wake are well known to the teams in the South West Federation for the odd way they slope in all directions. The Sidmouth team had a difficult task mastering how to play on them, the balls not going where expected!

After four doubles and two singles had been played the scores were equal at three-all, but this was to change!

After the next six games had been completed the home side were leading 8-4!

After a lovely ploughman’s lunch provided by the host club, play recommenced.

Sidmouth players managed to win just three of the remaining eight games, thus giving an impressive win to Dowlish Wake at 13-7.

In spite of the overall score, some of the games were very close. Two Sidmouth players managed to win a game by just one hoop, and three were lost by only one or two hoops!.

Ian Simpson and Graeme Pryor each managed to win two games: all other players had one win, including a doubles match.

The Sidmouth team has just one more match this season - in August. This time they will have to play on lawns smaller than they are accustomed to!

Few clubs in the South West can match the manicured level lawns we have in Sidmouth.
