Chairman

Updated: Sep 15, 2024

On Tuesday 3rd September the Sidmouth GC croquet team of Steve Pearson (captain), Philip Harris, Sue Lightbody, Paul Bradley, John Coombes and Bill McKee beat a strong team of six players from Budleigh Salterton to retain the Seagull Trophy which Sidmouth won while playing away at Budleigh in May of this year.

On an overcast morning Sidmouth started the day by winning three of the four opening closely fought doubles games against some strong opposition.

This was followed by Sidmouth winning three of the next four singles games with a standout performance from John Coombes coming out on top against a much higher ranked opponent.

A leisurely sociable lunch was taken and the weather improved considerably for the afternoon session of a further eight singles games.

Sidmouth again performed well, winning three of the first four games as John Coombes continued his morning success with another notable win.

Sidmouth now had an unassailable 9 - 3 lead over Budleigh going into the final singles games which were shared  two games each giving Sidmouth a 11 - 5 overall win.

The enjoyable day was rounded off with everyone enjoying teas and cakes and looking forward to a return match at Budleigh in 2025.
