Sidmouth Croquet Player Coombes is the Star of the Show

Sidmouth Herald published 17 July 2014

Last week a team from Swanage visited Sidmouth to play in the South West Federation of Croquet clubs Golf Croquet Level Play League, writes Helen Pryor.

The weather was fine and the lawns fast, two ingredients for a good day of croquet.

By lunchtime, after three doubles and nine singles games had been played, Sidmouth were in a commanding position having won eight of the games.

However, post lunch the visitors fought back to win four of the eight remaining games. Most of the games were well fought and very close, but the final result was a win for Sidmouth with a score of 12 to Swanage’s eight.

Sidmouth, justifiably, should feel proud to win the match as they were battling against three of Swanage’s best players, one of whom is a scratch player (handicap nought).

On the day, five of Sidmouth’s players each won two of the games they played and David Temple (handicap three) managed to beat William Ormerod, the Swanage scratch player.

The stand-out individual contribution however, came from John Coombes who won all three of his contests. Well done, John!
