Sidmouth Croquet - Corbett Spoons success for Richard Thurlow

Sidmouth Herald published 3 July 2014

Last Saturday ten members of the Croquet Club played a club internal tournament, the Corbett Spoons which is a one-ball competition, writes Helen Pryor

Normally in a singles game of croquet a player has two balls to play with, and run hoops. This competition is a light hearted game, but with a serious object, that of learning to play with a single ball. In an advanced game a player could be left to finish the game with one ball if the opponent had ‘pegged out’ the other ball.

The ten players each played four games in blocks. The winners and runners-up of the blocks went through to the semi-finals which saw Richard Thurlow play against Pam Bowra and Richard Croft, a fairly new player, take on Muriel Philpott.

Thurlow got off to a good start and held the lead throughout to defeat Bowra.

The other semi-final was won by the experienced Philpott, using a combination of good skill and clever tactics.

In the final it was Thurlow who continued his excellent form to claim victory.

In general the rain held off to make it a most pleasant day for all concerned.
