Sidmouth Croquet Club hosted the CA Handicap Singles event last week in splendid conditions, writes Colin Walls.
The event was won by Wayne Wiseman from Bristol in fine style. After winning all his games, amongst them a number of tough matches against good opposition, he took home the Handicap Goblet.
On the first day he saw off three opponents including Chris Donovan, the chairman of Budleigh Salterton Croquet Club (handicap 2.5), in spite of the chairman using his brand new, top of the range, Pidcock 4000 mallet!
On the Thursday he started out by beating Ken Wallman, a previous member of Sidmouth, returned from Australia for this occasion, and finished with a victory against Julie Horsley, the event manager.
Last year every section of this tournament was won by a Sidmouth player, so let us hope that this is not the start of a trend for outsiders to take our trophies.
