Sidmouth Defeat Cornish Visitors in Croquet Federation League Meeting

Updated: May 5, 2020

Sidmouth Herald published 3 July 2014

Sidmouth hosted a team from Cornwall in the Croquet Federation League and won handsomely by six games to one, writes Colin Walls.

In the morning Sidmouth won the doubles and both singles. Particular credit goes to Peter Hills who beat Richard Griffiths (ranked 187th in the world) by 26 points to 12.

In the afternoon Richard had his revenge and squeezed a 26 to 23 win against Nancy Temple, but all the other Sidmouth players won, with Mike Taylor having a particularly emphatic win 26 to 11 against Ian Wilson.

The lawns had dried out rather bumpily in the recent sunshine, and presented problems to those trying for subtlety, so the winning strategy was to play the percentage shots and not get carried away.

Thanks to Gill Hodge for an excellent lunch as usual.
