Thorley Edged Out Harris in Hatherley Tournament at Sidmouth

Sidmouth Herald published 31 August 2014

Last week saw the playing of the two-day Croquet Tournaments starting with Monday’s Cunningham High Handicappers, writes Pam Bowra.

There were 10 entries only this year, but all were keen to have a good day of croquet.

David Butler of Block A and John Davies of Block B won all their games and David went on to win in the final against John by five games to two.

On Tuesday it was the turn of the Low Handicappers in the Hatherley Tournament.

Fourteen entered making three blocks. Keith Thorley won all his games in Block A, Richard Thurlow won all his games in B and Margaret Piper won three of her four games in Block C.

There had to be a semi so to make the numbers up Philip Harris was the best runner up. The semis were played and Keith beat Margaret and Philip beat Richard.

This led to a final between Keith Thorley and Philip Harris.

A few of the days players had stayed on to watch and everyone was getting a bit desperate for a cup of tea and something to eat!

This issue was swiftly resolved by a member popping out for doughnuts and milk. Coffee was then served with doughnuts as the final was played.

It was a close affair, ultimately won by Thorley by one hoop. Post match, both winner and runner-up enjoyed coffee and doughnuts!
