Three Sidmouth players entered the Greek Open Croquet tournament played in Corfu earlier this month, writes David Butler.
All three Sidmouth players progressed to the second round of the main event (handicap singles) where, due to the vagaries of the draw, Peter
Nelson was eliminated by his Sidmouth colleague Richard Thurlow!
Meanwhile, the third Sidmouth entry, Andrew Thomas, was making serene progress through the early rounds meeting Richard Thurlow in the semi-final before emerging as overall champion by beating Peter Cutting
comprehensively in the final.
As if this was not enough, Andrew, in partnership with John Dawson, won the supplementary doubles tournament with Richard Thurlow and partner Liz Wilson were the runners-up. A one-day golf
croquet competition was also held with Andrew Thomas again being the winner to complete a clean sweep.
Due to airline weight limitations some redistribution of luggage was necessary to enable all the trophies to be repatriated.
It is understood that EDDC may shortly receive a planning application for an extension to the trophy room at the Thomas home!
