Sidmouth took the bragging rights with a 12-8 success when they met Budleigh Salterton, writes David Butler.
The South West Federation Golf Croquet matchwas played on a sunny, but breezy day. The visitors pitched up with a slightly higher handicap and this gave them the advantage of having more ‘extra turns’.
The first two sessions each comprised of two doubles and two singles’ games. Sidmouth won two doubles and lost two whilst in the first four singles there were two Sidmouth wins, one draw and a single defeat to give them an overall four-and-a-half to three-and-a-half lead.
The next stage of the match saw four singles played and this resulted in one win for Sidmouth, two wins for Budleigh and one game was drawn and the match went into the luncheon interval with the score six-all!
After lunch, eight further singles’ games were played. After four of them had been completed the overall score was still all square – now at eight-all.
It was across the final four games that the Sidmouth team showed their class. They won all four to seal a 12-8 overall victory.
Margaret Piper was the ‘star player’ for the victors, wining all four of her games. Meanwhile, Graeme Pryor drew one game, and won three whilst Andrew Thomas also won three of his games.
All players enjoyed the day of croquet, but some were happier than others by tea time!
