Sidmouth croquet players came first and second in the Southern Regional Final of the Prostate Cancer UK Croquet One-Ball Championship at Surbiton, writes Colin Walls.
This form of croquet leaves no room for error and requires great concentration, particularly as matches are quadruple banked; there are four matches going on simultaneously on one lawn. Competitors ranged from those with a minus three handicap to those with one of plus 24!
The Sidmouth entrants, Richard Thurlow and Andrew Thomas, being towards the larger end of the handicap table.
The day ended with five players on five wins whilst Andrew Thomas recorded six victories and Richard Thurlow secured success in seven out of his eight matches – with his only defeat coming against Thomas!
This is a stunning result, particularly for Thomas who has been playing competitively for less than a year.
They each deserved their crystal decanter and goblet prizes.
The whole event, including local club heats, has raised over £3,000 for Prostate Cancer UK.
