Budleigh Salterton Croquet Club hosted The National Veterans’ Championship over the final week of June, writes David Butler.

Forty players participated, mostly from the South of England with one visitor from Australia.

The week started with The Longman Trophies (Sussex Trugs) doubles competition. Twelve pairs entered this knock-out competition and after three rounds the final was contested between Sidmouth pairing Sue Rogers and Philip Harris and Elizabeth McKenzie-Gray and Ian McDiarmid from Woking with the Sidmouth partnership winning with a plus one score.

The Veterans Championship, The Rothwell Challenge Cup (Advanced Play Singles) was competed for by 12 very low handicap players (handicap range from minus one to one-point-five).

Sidmouth’s Dave Mundy won, plus 17, in the final against Australian player David Wise.

Twelve low handicap players (ranging from two to seven), played for The Felixstowe Cup (Advanced Play Singles).

Sidmouth player Roger Mills won his block, but unfortunately lost minus 17 to Tony Bower from Budleigh Salterton in the final.

Eight medium handicap players (handicap ranging from eight to 14) played for The Strickland Cup (Handicap Singles) and, after five rounds Sidmouth’s Peter Miller was the winner having won four of his five games, making this a very successful tournament for Sidmouth players.
