Mixed fortunes as Sidmouth Croquet Team Begin a New Season

Sidmouth Herald published 16 May 2013

Sidmouth South West Croquet team travelled to Street to play a South West Federation Golf Croquet fixture against Abbey Croquet Club, writes Roger Hendy. This was the first match of the season and the odds appeared to be against them from the start.

As the morning progressed, Sidmouth players were unable to adjust to playing on the half size, substandard lawns, which they found very challenging!

After an excellent lunch provided by the host team. Sidmouth struggled through eight more games, winning only two.

The winning games for Sidmouth were played by Michael Hide, Graeme Pryor and Margaret Piper. Michael Hide with partner Rob Matthews drew their doubles game. The final result was a resounding win for Abbey by 13 games.

There was better news for the team a few days later when they won their meeting with Budleigh Salterton.

It was a particularly good result as all seven members of the team contributed to the overall score of Sidmouth 13 Budleigh 7.

Pamela Bowra and Dudley Ractcliffe performed particularly well winning all of their matches. A very satisfactory day was rounded off with an enjoyable tea provided by Gill Hodge. Further matched are planned in a very busy season.
