East Devon croquet players play in South African sunshine

Sidmouth Journal published 22 February 2017

Three croquet players from East Devon swapped the English winter for a South African summer to play in the Western Cape Open Championship held at Somerset West near Capetown, writes Colin Walls.

Former England international Dave Mundy (Sidmouth/Budleigh) had a disappointing tournament, but compensated with an active social programme.

Sidmouth chairman Peter Nelson progressed to the semi-final of the Veteran’s event losing narrowly to the eventual winner George Noble.

The outstanding performance must be credited to Jane Babbage (Budleigh), who played steadily in an extremely strong field to reach the final of the B Level Advanced competition where she was beaten by Barry Huxley also from UK who was clearly the strongest player in the field.

Peter Nelson reports that playing conditions were challenging with strong winds and temperatures in the mid 30s centigrade.

Overseas players were welcomed by extremely generous and friendly hosts which made the event a memorable experience.
