Golf Handicap Finals

Finalists: Edward / Margaret Colman and John Coombes / Dudley Ractliffe

The Golf Croquet High Handicap Tournament now seems to be firmly established in the club calendar, with a total of 16 members competing again this year. It is hoped that this will encourage even more members to enter next year.

The winners were John Coombes and Dudley Ractliffe who beat husband and wife team Edward and Margaret Colman 7-5.

Edward and Margaret have done particularly well in the internal golf croquet competitions, having both reached the semi-finals of the singles event earlier in the year.

Dudley should also be congratulated on his performance after a period of absence from the game.

The beaten semi-finalists were Philip/Marian Harris and Ann Holbeche/Colin Walls.

The day ran smoothly under the management of Muriel Philpott and John Coombes.

Open Golf Croquet Doubles Tournament

The following day saw 20 players take part in the Open Golf Croquet Doubles Tournament, managed again by Muriel Philpott.

The players were split into two groups of five teams and there were several closely fought group games.

The semi-final brought together Richard Mills/John Dixon against Ian Friedlander/Margaret Piper and Ken Wallman/Paul Griew against John Coombes/Colin Walls. Once again, these were very close matches, with only one point separating winners and losers!

The final between Richard/John and Ken/Paul produced an exciting game, with the spectators clapping enthusiastically as each of the first four hoops were run from long distances. In the end, it was Richard and John who triumphed, winning by two hoops to gain the Cunningham Salver.

The Selectors

Eight competitors are selected by the Croquet Association to play in this prestigious event and Sidmouth were treated to a feast of high-level performances from players with handicaps ranging from 0 to –1.5

The lawns were in excellent condition and received nothing but praise from the players, with the tournament referee also very satisfied with the accuracy of the hoop setting (one 16th of an inch!).

The Cup was won by the favourite, Jonathan Hills (-1.5) from Colchester, who recorded 12 wins from the 14 games.

Campbell Morrison, Edinburgh, was runner-up with eight wins.

Thanks are due to groundsman Colin Whitehall and the hoop setting team of Robert Matthews and David Temple for presenting the Sidmouth facility in such a favourable light.
