Playing croquet is all part of the trip away from the British winter for Sidmouth couple David and Barbara Clarke. During a two-month tour through New Zealand, Australia, Japan and Hong Kong, they entered the North Island Championship, hosted by the Wanganui Croquet Club. David finished an excellent third in the singles event. Barbara was disadvantaged by the competition format, which meant that she had to play on level terms with some very good players. Nevertheless, she managed to chalk up an impressive +16 result, even without the 10 bisques to which she would normally be entitled. Both thoroughly enjoyed their experience of Wanganui and their warm welcome.
